Mandarin Chinese
Mandarin Chinese Program
The Mandarin Chinese program at Southwest Early College High School is in its fourth year of implementation. The program originally began as a pilot program but, because of its success and strong community support, the Mandarin Chinese program is now offered at all of Southwest Early College High School’s feeder schools beginning at the pre-k level. Students at the high school level are well prepared to take the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam and the HSK Chinese proficiency exam produced by the Chinese government. Students graduating from Southwest with HSK Chinese proficiency exams are immediately competitive to work at the international level with these recognized certificates. Additionally, Southwest has teamed up with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Office of Global Engagement through a grant to promote multilingualism and global education in a grant from the United States Department of Education in the promotion of critical languages. Students graduating from Southwest can continue their Chinese studies at our partner university, which also offers scholarship opportunities for students with higher levels of Mandarin to study abroad.
